What makes music so profoundly moving is the way it organizes tonality. Our ear, almost instinctively, awaits the return home. When we hear the seven notes of a scale rise, from C to B, something within us longs for the final note, the higher C, so that everything may at last find its resolution.

It is an extraordinary gift granted to humanity. What allows me to understand and appreciate the existence of the divine is this intimate certainty, inscribed within us, that we are on a journey back toward our origin.

Music conveys this feeling to us. A chord left unresolved becomes unbearable; it calls for its resolution, because tonality must return home. Great music always offers us this experience. It is perhaps the closest form of communication we have with the angels.”
